Heartworm disease is spread through infected mosquitos when they bite our furry friends. Mosquitos carry a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis, which are transmitted to dogs and cats once that infected mosquito bites. The worms then mature into adults, mate, and then produce offspring while living inside. The worms then migrate to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.
Lyme disease is spread through deer ticks when they attach and feed. Once a bite occurs from the deer tick, the disease that is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi enters the blood stream and is carried throughout the body. Ticks are found in forest preserves, heavy wooded areas, and also grassy areas. Tick bites can occur anytime that your furry friend is outside in your backyard or out adventuring during a hike.
